Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Explosions Caused by Battery, Probe Finds

Samsung’s investigation into what caused some Galaxy Note 7s to catch fire has revealed that the batteries caused the devices to explode. Although there is no official word from the company yet, a Reuters report suggests that Samsung has supposedly been able to replicate the fires during its investigation and that the cause of the fires could not be explained by hardware design or software-related matters.

Following continued reports of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices exploding while being charged, Samsung had recalled some 2.5 million Note 7 phones in September last year and identified the cause of the fire as a manufacturing process problem at one of its suppliers. But even after replacing the supplier, when the phones continued to catch fire, the company was forced to permanently halt sales of the device costing it $19 billion.

The company will likely announce the results of the probe on January 23, revealing what faults led to the massive recall scandal, and will also announce measures it is taking to avoid a repeat of the product safety failures in its future devices.
