Twitter went bonkers when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s picture started showing up in search results for the query “Top 10 criminals in India” on Google.

Google Top 10 Criminals

Google has now come out and apologised to the PM and people of the country and said that the troubling search results weren’t reflective of its views.

The company blamed the issue on the way the images was described on the Internet which yield surprising results for the specific queries.

“We apologise for any confusion or misunderstanding this has caused. We’re continually working to improve our algorithms to prevent unexpected results like this,” said Google.

The picture of PM Modi isn’t the only misfit in the “Top 10 criminals in India” list on Google. It also includes photos of Dawood Ibrahim, Osama Bin Laden, American gangster Al Capone, Sanjay Dutt, Hafiz Saeed, Bill Gates and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

While the completely whacked out results could be because of pranksters using great SEO techniques to have a little fun, it’s also caused due to the way Google indexes information, serving up related images for certain queries.
