Zomato, the restaurant directory launched in 2008 , has now ventured into South Africa by launching its new Johannesburg section. The Johannesburg section will cover over 2000 restaurants in Johannesburg.
The section will carry restaurant information like scanned menus, photos, mapped coordinates, and user reviews from the 2000 restaurants, pubs, bars and other entertainment establishments it plans to cover. This new section will be available both on the mobile app as well as the Zomato web portal.
Other than India, Zomato currently covers UAE, UK, Qatar, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, listing over 94,000 restaurants across these countries. Johannesburg will be its first location in South Africa.
Founded by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah in July 2008 for restaurants in New Delhi, Zomato claims to receive 11 million visitors/month on the site and has expanded its services to 21 cities across 7 countries, covering over 94,000 restaurants.
Zomato’s iOS app had recently recently moved from Apple maps to Google maps to improve its locations aware function. Hopefully this change will churn out more accurate results for users in Johannesburg too.
Last month Info Edge (India) Limited, had invested around $10 mn in the company, bringing its total investment in Zomato to $15 mn.
