ReviewGang – Consolidated Reviews of Hindi Movies [We need it!]

In Indian Startups by NextBigWhat10 Comments

Next time when you decide on a Bollywood flick, do not refer to just one or two reviews here and there. Drop in at ReviewGang and see all major reviews by all the stakeholders of Bollywood. Better still, contribute with your own reviews on movies as well for the general benefit of population. Both Bollywood & we really need it :-)

ReviewGang aggregates reviews by known & trusted critics (editors) and gives a consolidated critic rating on a movie too. For example, on ‘Karthik Calling Karthik‘ you can find all reviews spread across National dailies, TV channel reviewers and Internet based media. What I personally found useful is the official synopsis from ReviewGang, which like looking at behind of a book/DVD before buying into the movie.

Another kickass feature that I found was that of evaluating the behavior of trusted critics – i.e. editors of media cos. Check out comparison of critic’s ratings in the pic below. One reviewer belongs to newspaper industry, another to television media and another to Internet(digital media):

Observe the area around My name is Khan!

ReviewGang also allows you to listen to full albums from the latest bollywood releases free and legally. It is pertinent to mention here that Cricket & Bollywood – two biggest entertainments for Indians – are all game over the internet now. We at #Pi really liked the simple interface of the website, which seems more like a cool mashup of IMDB & RottenTomatoes. It would be great if ReviewGang went further, allowing user comments under the reviews sourced by trusted critics and also if it thought a little about encouragement (along with curation) of ‘User Generated’ reviews. Engagement with the market is the mantra.

Dear Pi readers, do give ReviewGang a flick!

    Founder of ReviewGang (RG) Here:

    1. Curation of user reviews is very important. Anyone who has seen the state of rediff comments know how bad the situation can become. Since RG cannot employ an army of people to moderate the reviews, so I have decided to segregate the users into trusted editors and others. Anyone can become an editor if they already have a movie review blog or if enough RG users mark their reviews as helpful. Phew!! that was long :)

    2. In addition to the features listed here, RG also provides you Videos and Trailers of the movie and reviews from our editors.

    3. You can also keep track of upcoming movies – watch their trailers, read synopsis etc.

Thanks to PI for showcasing ReviewGang :)

In summary, you are employing a wiki approach to collecting movie reviews. While you have provided a better than average review curation mechanism, is it fair to say that your biggest challenge will be in soliciting reviews/ feedback on an on-going basis? in other words, building an engaged community or traffic? why reviewgang vs. rediff, for example?

      have you looked at

      1. Manu

If you want “movie news” you can use rediff. But if you want to know more about a single movie, I don’t see anyone offering that in India.

Getting reviews is indeed a challenge. But the site is such that the value is diminished only slightly if there are only few movie reviews from users because the site offers so
much more. So I’m aiming to get traffic by attracting the users to aggregated critic reviews, videos, music etc and a percentage of the visitors would like to review movies and the reviews will grow eventually

yes, I know about rotten tomatoes. IMDB and rottentomatoes are inspirations.

          Hi Manu,

I am curious – do you have any good programmers in your team? I have an idea that I would love to collaborate on .. if you are interested. where are you based out of in India?

The website looks really neat and tidy. Also it has Reviews, Audio songs, Trailers of the movies which is 1 place for everything to find. Also the critics reviews are present which very few websites have. So this website is a complete package for the information about new movie.

We are in the process of launching our startup website based on the similar lines, it will have bollywood movie trailers, songs playlists, critics reviews + A rewarding system for the end user for submitting their reviews

Nikhat Kazmi is seemingly supporting ‘My name is Khan’….wow! Very nicely pointed out Arvind :-)

In fact all these trusted sources are religious zealots. We trust TOI but not the editor Nikhat Kazmi per se. How hopeless these people can be even for something as simple as a movie.

And i really don’t know why every time critics ratings are less than the user ratings? for the website, its good and offers so many things.

For user reviews, they could have provided an option to write reviews may be just after asking for name and email. if anything in appropriate remove it. and there is no comparison of rediff with this site as rediff simply sucks

    1. Manu

Yes, I could have gone for a simpler process to garner reviews but my experience has been that the quality suffers unless you moderate the comments. Right now resources to moderate the comments are not available :)

Critic ratings are not always less than user ratings. In the front page itself, toh baat pakki, teen patti, my name is khan etc are rated higher by critics.
