IPaidABribe Goes Mobile. Now SMS When You Pay Bribe

The not-for-profit initiative, IPaidABribe has gone mobile and now you can report your bribe experience by sending a SMS.

To report a bribe, follow the following format:
SMS Bribe <Followed by the City, the civic department and the amount paid> to 58888
e.g Bribe paid 100 rs to the traffic police in Mumbai

IPaidABribe: Analytics

Based on data collected from users, IPaidABribe has collated massive data (though important to note that this isn’t a verified data) and here are few key numbers that will help you gauge the level of corruption in the country:

  • Rs. 2 Crores Paid in 214 bribes [Kolkata]
  • 1 crores paid in 643 bribes [Pune]
  • 1 crores paid in 922 bribes [Chennai]
  • 4 crores paid in 1051 bribes [Mumbai]
  • 2 crores paid in 1105 bribes [Hyderabad]
  • 11 crores paid in 4060 bribes [Bangalore]bribe_india

When it comes to individual departments, police takes the cake (and cherry), followed by Registration department.police_bribe

It’s important to note that these aren’t absolute numbers, but are numbers reported by individuals from these cities.

Initiatives like these may not have an instant impact, but go a long way in providing the much needed third party check to governance. If you pay bribe, make it a point to share the details.

As far as IPaidABribe is concerned, we’d recommend them to ensure that there is enough data safety around the initiative.
