KK, one of the Pluggd.in readers sent us this tip that he received this email from his KingClub (kingfisher frequent fliers) subscription.

So, while there has been no other promotions of iPad in India, maybe Kingfisher will promote this offer to Kingclub members.

After all, Kingfisher Calendar was launched on iPhone only [and no other print form]

[Thanks KK for the tip.]

Meanwhile, enjoy the review of iPad

I am a techie…I own a Nokia smartphone, own a Windows and a Linux laptop, use a Mac at work, own an iPod, tons of software, just bought the Infibeam Pi reader, and own loads of other gadgets. In India, a 3G-free land, and without proper wireless internet connections freely available, no content providers to speak of, and the iPad’s stunning lack of ability to download stuff onto it, I am still curious, as to how exactly it is going to do anything for us Indians. Remember, India is one of the few markets where the iPhone FAILED abysmally.

    Harish.

    1. Rajiv

Harish, Actually I am looking forward to the device as an in-home utility. I have broadband in Hyderabad with a wifi network set up in our house. To answer your question, I would imagine that I am one of the target customers for the Indian market. I think the iPhone failed here because it was overpriced, and did not interface well with the cell networks here. However, the iPad is not a phone. I think Indian users will be able to make great use of it in the home and office as long as there is a reliable wifi connection. Just a thought. Now if we could just get the Indian government to reduce the import tariff.

      Rajiv

    2. MSK

I agree with Rajiv, that the Iphone did not have the right environment for success in India namely because of the technological hurdle but to add to that , also because >50% of the users in India still use the phone not as a smart device for internet connection but as a common utility for basic calls and sms service.
But with 3G auction on the cards and big International players like Qualcomm entering the fray for broadband wireless auction(http://bit.ly/bwOm6l), things might change.

    3. Bcn

MR harish.. these things are there with many school students nowdays,,, ur just a gadget freak literally ..not a techie man…

      hi Harsih,

I bought an ipad last week when I was in thailand and it cost me Rs:40,000=00 for a 16 GB Wifi. I am already using it on wifi at home and works superb. Unfortunately we have to wait still for the launch on 3G in india.

what on earth makes you think teh price for teh ipad is high?? im surprsied at you ability not to understand what a gadget worth its money is!!

i knw and im sure u do tooo a lot of ppl pay bigger amounts for cell phones that cant do half teh things properly they are made for and advertise for (remember N95, anyone?)

for whats its worth, whatever the ipad may do with its closed os and limited capability in india, it still is very much worth teh price for all the wifi models …

      1. Anand

What’s wrong with N95? I am using it for the last 3 years and still able use all the features of it. I found it a worthful to invest in.

Will an US iPad work in India. If a home has a wifi network then, I think, an iPad should work as well in India as in the USA.

do you have the wifi one or 3G? Will the 3G version work in India?

          1. kums

I have the 16 Gb 3G wifi and its already working at home in India…… unfortunately #G is yet to be launched and therefore we ( indians ) gotta be patient.

          1. peter

go to ebay.in and buy it from there. It is secured.

  4. Juventis

@Ritika: The 3G version is not supported for Indian carriers as yet.
But once it is officially launched it should be

  5. ritika

Thanks. so if one had to get it now, would the wifi one make sense?

  6. Juventis

@ Ritika: That depends upon if you have a a good wifi connectivity in your city and airports. Most of all you should see if the places where you would be using your ipad ( your office and home) has wifi access or not.
Also let me tell you that:
    1) Ipad does not support Flash.
    2) It does not support multitasking,i.e You cannot use two applications at the same time

So before buying amke sure you understand your requirements.

      1. Arihant

sadly NO as of now , as ipad doesnt support 3rd party apps/ hardware as on now such as an usb modem, plus it doesnt have a usb port to begin with , so the only true way for the ipad to access internet without wifi is the 3G micro sim, which with out current TRAI geniuses at work, lack of progressive thinking, and absolute anti-technological brains sitting at positions with power, will take practically years to be properly implemented . by which time , a new ipad 2.o would be out!!

    1. kums

  10. Juventis

Apple does not encourage or discourage the grey market retailing of its devices.
1)Until Apple launches its, Ipad officially you would not be able to access the applications available through its i-tune stores.
2)As long as you have any wifi, you should be able to hookup the internet with your Ipad.
3)Apple has not yet launched its 3G model of Ipad, so I am assuming you have the basic wireless model of the Ipad. You will at no point of time be able to use 3G plan in India, even when the Ipad is officially launched here.
    4) And all those who have bought the Ipad, through the grey market, like one such person who is selling above, you will have to wait for the official launch of the Ipad to use the Itune store here.

BSNL 3G works well on iPad. One has to cut it with slight precision and it works well… I’m using it.

Hi, I tried it with the MTNL sim in Delhi but though it shows full signal and the 3g sign, it unfortunately doesnt work. I wonder why? Any one who has made the MTNL 3G sim work in Delhi on the ipad? Thanks.

Hi i am having the same problem with my ipad, i have an mtnl prepaid 3g card but i believe that you have to provide mtnl with the model number of your phone to get the internet activated. Since this is not a true mobile phone, i am confused on how to proceed. Any ideas?

          1. Vikas

Hmmmm strange thing is that it works in Noida and in Okhla which I presume is because it latches onto the BSNL towers instead of the MTNL ones. But the MTNL Edge works in Delhi but not 3g even though it has full bars and shows the 3G sign. I really wonder what is going on with MTNL. Do they need to update the IPAD IMEI numbers into their system? If so, who does one contact for that? Thanks.

    SKS,

I again reiterate Apple as a policy does not support or discourage Grey Market for its products. It helps the products to reach the early adopters.
Any jail broken Ipads/Iphones, would not be able to access the Itunes store for downloading the application.
In short, you may be able to use it for browsing net , but you will not be able to use all its features and updates, specially those available on the Itune stores. And the real fun lies in the apps which are available for the IPad.:)

    Hope that helps,
    Thanks

    1. SKS

      thanks Juventis.

do you have any idea when the ipad would be launched in India? and about the prices? it would be more that US price?
      regards.
      SKS

    2. sachin

jailbroken Ipads / Iphones can access and download application from Itunes app stores, also the apps can be used and updated.

  15. Juventis

I believe the basic model was already launched in April, The 3G model would take some months. Given that India’s 3G auction got completed a couple of days back, you might have to wait till Apple sign’s a contract with its Indian partners .
Buy the model from only recognized Apple product distributors to enable all the features. In India most distributors should be selling it for INR 28,000 to 29,000

  16. Atul Shah

You can also try http://www.shopyourworld.com . The site has a merchant association with Amazon that enables you to shop on Amazon and get it shipped right to your doorstep. The pricing provided on the site is in INR and includes shipping charges as well.

  17. SKS

any idea when the ipad with camera version will be launched? it it is soon, may be two/three months better to wait….

  18. nilesh

Without a USB port, it is useless to me. Pen drives, tata photon card etc. would not work with this at all. I would rather wait for tablets from other manufactures (maybe on android).

    hi Juventis,

these comments are very useful and informative… i was about buy an ipad , but after reading all this… it seems it does not make any sense buying the ipad in india .. it does not hv a usb port to start … and here the story ends ….

thank you very much all of u for ur valuable comments …

  21. Sushant

Dude, passing up on an ipad for a USB port is like refusing a free transfer of cristiano Ronaldo because of his hair. There is so much more to an ipad than the lack of a USB port. If u knew apple at all, you’d know that you couldn’t dream of having a USB port on one of their devices. It goes completely against their closed loop data management system. The very fact that only iTunes gives you access to iPhones, itouch and ipad on a pc/mac tells you clearly enough that adding a USB port would be nothing less than blasphemy on apple’s part.

An ipad offers way too much to be refused for lack of a USB port. It’s fast processor, high resolution, iWork apps, book reader capabilities, are but a few of the large number of positives that it has going for it. You’re not always going to need Internet on the go. DL a few books to read while u travel, work on your presentation for work, use instapaper, watch a movie, play a game, read a monthly magazine offline, make a journal entry.. and if u really need it, there’s always BSNL and Wikihow.

  24. Naveen

The Ipad looks good but I think I will wait because Apple will come out with a new version soon. May in later this year. I hope the next version will have more memory, a webcam, and proper office suite. And of course multitasking. These are the stuff that i need for replacing my laptop with an ipad.

  25. Elsie

Its good, but i thought that it had in built connection!! u mean u need a wifi connection to access the net? then its barely usefull. pooh!

    1. KUMAR

yes wifi is required when u r within the range of network like home etc. when on the move one needs 3G….. that makes it COMPLETE……as its meant to be.

  26. Suresh

I have the iPad 64GB with 3G. I have yet to put a replacement SIM in my iPad (It still has the original AT&Ts). For now I use it mostly for reading Wall St Journal, do cross words, read news through Pulse, play chess, and read books. I have an iPod. I don’t use it that much. But the iPad, I carry it everywhere.

A lot of content can be downloaded when at home and be read when you are being driven to work or in a plane or waiting at some place. It is the most used gadget at our home right now.

Once I put in the 3G from BSNL (you have to cut it up so that it fits into iPad, which uses micro SIM), I can also use the IPad as a navigational tool.

    1. Vikas

Anyone managed to use the ipad with the MTNL 3G sim in Delhi? I can only make the 3G work in Noida or Okhla but not in rest of Delhi. Else only on Edge with the MTNL card.

Note: Im not here to make profit – bought it as a gift for my son, realised that he needs a laptop for school rather than ipad, hence selling it. ONLY SERIOUS BUYS RESPOND – PREFER FROM MUMBAI.

    Details as follows:
    Ipad – A$ 799 (Rs 33,600)
    Ipad camera connection kit – A$ 39 (Rs 1,600)
    Ipad Case + screen = free worth A$ 20 (Rs 820)
    Apple original invoice provided.

I have Ipad 32gb,just purchased two days back froim US , now i am in india. Any one interested will sell te same original bill price which is $650

  31. Darky

I have been going through all the infos and I think Apple Ipad is not value for money – unless one is more keen on looks than usability then too galaxy tab or probably Google Tablet is a better option.

  32. sonny

ipad india entry is too late, when ipad2 launch is just months away. apple has been taking Indian market for granted. Time to do some homework about the Indian market, steve jobs, as this market has been lapping up the $500-600 mobile phones like BBerrys and others like crazy.there is this middle class and upwards market which is growing phenomenally every passing year.

    Hey guys..

are you all mad or what? Why do you want this device for 35000? you better buy a sony vaio mini note book. you will get 320 gb hard disk with 2 gb ram.Battery back up is just like ipad.
this i pad is just for kids. not for professionals.

if you are passionate about touch buy a samsung galexy pad or a phone. But remember..
with these devices you can’t do anything more than what your mobile can do.

if it fell down. its gone. can you find out a single person who can repair your i pad?

    think well and buy.

keep your money. dont waste it please

as usual, I had visited croma at aundh today just few minutes ago to buy for sure an I pad. They however refused to give me deduction of minimum of Rs 4000 for my tablet ( 6 month old micromax) as advertised in recent news papers. They gave reason that they can not give 4000/- though it is advertsed by apple. Its their discretion. I have a photograph of the manager of Croma-Aundh –who did this. So I came back without buying I pad. If I don't get quik justice ; I want to file suit against apple for publishing mis leading enticing adverts , which are untrue and decieiving. Fortunately I have 2 LLM lawyers ( I house). I was a happy I pad user till today–who is disturbed by your misleading adverts.
