Report: Mobile handset shipment tops 100 million in the first 6 months of 2012. Nokia keeps the lead

In the first six months of this year, a total of 102.43 million handsets were shipped to India with Nokia still leading pack. During the same period, India smartphone shipment reached 5.5 million units, according to Cyber Media Research’s Mobile Handsets Market Review’s September 2012 release.

Gartner forecasts that in 2013, sales of mobile devices will reach 251 million units, marking an increase of 13.5 percent over 2012 sales of 221 million units. The Gartner report says that mobile handset market is expected to show steady growth through 2016 when end user sales will surpass 326 million units.

As per CyberMedia Research (CMR), in terms of unit shipments share during the 6-month period ended June 2012 the leading smartphone OSs were Android (56.4%), Symbian (17.4%), BlackBerry (12.1%), Bada (8.5%), iOS (3.0%) and Windows Mobile (2.6%) on a base of 5.50 million units.
