What if you discover that you’ve missed out important details about a place you just toured? It happens to me all the time. And it feels terrible. With smartphones, you can search on the fly. But then, you’d be spending a lot of time on the phone, while you miss the outside world.
Tour guides? Hard to find or expensive. The cheap ones usually turn out to be of little use. Books? Cumbersome. Friends? Busy.
What do you do? Try Guiddoo. The app, a phone based tour guide for famous monuments, provides an extremely nice audio and visual guide to the places you visit. For instance, if you are going to the Taj Mahal, it gives you a beautiful audio guide which tells you the story of Taj Mahal.
It also gives you a neatly ordered list of key sights and audio visual bytes around it. For instance, it tells you that the Darwaza-i-Rauza, is a detached gateway to the Taj Mahal and it is particular to Islamic architecture. It runs you through finer details as you walk through the monument.
The app also lets you check-in at a monument and upload pictures. A neat timeline gives you a historical perspective. It also covers all the basic details such as opening and closing hours, weather conditions and accessibility.
You can also download and store it on the phone whenever you are connected to a WiFi hotspot. This is particularly handy while you are traveling, when you need to go slow on data usage.
It currently has about 20 famous monuments including the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pyramids of Giza, The Great Wall of China and The Statue Of Liberty. Makers of the app are planning to cover over 100 tourist attractions and launch various language features. They are also making an iOS and Windows app. The app is free to install. However, one needs to purchase content for about $2 for each monument.
Android users can download the app here.
