After the Rickshaw-Battery, Here is an Enfield-Plough [Jugaad]

Few weeks ago, we had featured novel inventions by Suprio Das in the form of a cycle-rickshaw-operated battery and an indigenous water-treatment device. Here is another innovation originated in our hinterlands, that aims at easing life and reducing costs for farmers.

Welcome “Bullet Santi”, an agricultural implement made by modifying the Royal Enfield motorcycle. The petrol motorcycle is converted into a diesel one driven by a 5.5 H.P. engine. It is then provided with an attachment replacing the rear wheel. The attachment can have various kinds of tools attached to it for ploughing, inter-culturing and sowing operations.

The inventor is Mansukhbhai Ambabhai Jagani, a farmer of village Mota Devaliya in Amreli district, Gujarat. He had to drop out of school after class V due to financial constraints and hep his farmer father. He later worked in diamond-cutting units in Surat and further learnt welding and is now the owner of a welding unit.

The story behind the invention is one of necessity. Regular occurrence of drought in Saurashtra region of Gujarat forced the farmers to look for a replacement for bullocks for carrying out agricultural operations. The reasons for the change was driven by the fact that fodder for the draught animal is very scarce in the area and regular famine was making it impossible for the farmers to feed the bullocks. Also the farm laborers move toward cities was making it difficult for farmers to find people who could harness the bullocks and plough the fields. Mansukhbhai Jagani was approached by the villagers to look for an alternative that could not only save labor but also speed up the process of farming.

Features of the Bullet Santi:

  • A machine much smaller than the tillers and tractors but stronger than bullocks.
  • Easy assembly and low cost attachment for farming, inter-culturing and sowing operation
  • It requires half an hour to carry out cultivation operation in one acre. The diesel consumption required for the same is 2 litres.
  • The unit is capable of performing all the agricultural operations carried out by a pair of bullocks.
  • It is multi-purpose meaning the device can be used even for spraying and other agricultural operations.
  • Price: Rs 20,000 for a complete set with three implements (excluding Bullet motorcycle)
  • Can be reused for transportation as a motorcycle in the evenings (and weekends).

Jagani’s Bullet Santi was patented by Grassroots Innovation Augmentation Network (GIAN) in the US, under USPTO patent number 6,854,404. Mansukhbhai was also acknowledged by National Innovation Foundation-India, an organization under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) with the main goal of providing institutional support in scouting, spawning, sustaining and scaling up grassroots green innovations and helping their transition to self supporting activities.

We need more of such innovators in India, and not just people who can build new apps for your iPhone/Android phone. What do you think? How can we encourage such inventions? Let us know your ideas in the comments section below.
