The BPO, incubated in IIT Madras in 2005 was founded by Saloni Malhotra and had earlier raised angel funding from Rajiv Kuchhal, one of the founding members of Progeon BPO (acquired by Infosys).

DesiCrew signs up clients to whom it delivers BPO services through delivery centres set up tier II towns and villages.  The idea behind the company was to set up rural BPOs so that unemployed youth can find work and training.

Compared to urban BPOs, the cost overheads of a rural BPO are lesser. However, finding right skill sets in large numbers is a difficult proposition. Over the last few years, many rural BPOs have been set up in India with mixed success. Various state governments have also been helping rural BPOs with incentives to generate employment in small towns. For instance, in Karnataka, around Rs 40 lakh is given as subsidy to companies that set up rural BPOs.

Lok Capital backed RuralShores is another BPO which sets up its delivery centers in tier II and tier III centers.
