Delhi Metro Porn Scandal is Testimony to How Much We Can Trust Government With Data

Delhi Metro Watching YouRemember the Delhi Public School MMS sex scandal of 2004? Multiply it by 250 and add naked incompetence and potentially criminal government officials to the mix. Behold the 2013 Delhi Metro Scandal! What a shame!

Video footage of couples making out on the Delhi Metro has hit major porn websites, according to a report. More than 250 clips of couples making out in near empty trains were uploaded onto these sites, The Hindustan Times reported.

Unless a government official trusted with security of the metro and people travelling on it or someone with access has perversely done it, the tapes couldn’t have magically appeared on porn websites.

As usual, the government agencies have started playing the blame game. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is blaming the Central Reserve Police Force and the police is blaming the metro.

This calls into question what action will be taken? Does this amount to gross violation of privacy? If not, shooting and distributing porn is illegal in India. Will the DMRC or the CRPF be taken to task?

Will anyone be compensated at all? Of course we can expect an inquiry. But what more will be done about this?

That aside, can we trust our government with large amounts of data? With many sophisticated tools at its disposal to spy on its citizen, can we trust the  Government to leave us alone? Like for instance the Aadhaar database it has been building up? What about the National Population Register?

Can we trust our law enforcement agencies? That the police force has implicit biases is no secret.  Can we trust our police to not profile people based on race? Caste or Religion?

While we chew on these, the terrible truth remains that once shit hits the Internet, it will stay there forever.
