Indian Government Launches .bharat domain; To Be Available in Devanagari Script [Tad Late?]

The government of India has launched the .bharat domain which enables users to access internet addresses in 8 different Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Konkani and more. The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) will soon also launch the Internationalised Domain Name (IDN) in other Indian languages like Bangla, Urdu, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil and Gujarati.hindidomainnames_thumb.jpg

Although websites have been available in Indian languages, this move is intended to give easier access to information on the Internet as the .in domain has only allowed Web addresses written in Roman letters.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plans to empower India with technology, Internet usage is being widely promoted for government services. Modi government plans to make broadband available across two and half lakh Gram Panchayats by 2017 through the National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN). This is where the importance of having .bharat domain available in Indian languages is highlighted.

By supporting eCommerce, the government expects revolutionary changes in rural India in terms of employment and business opportunities.

Minister of communications and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the department will soon make .bharat domain available across all Indian languages.

Local Language in India : The Desktop Web Vs. Smartphone Era

Clearly, local language never took off in the desktop web (read : Why Indian Languages Failed to make a mark Online!). The local language revolution in India will happen *only* on smartphone for which the one doesn’t really need to market a domain names. All that government needs to do is to work with local language companies and use their technology (like font rendering) to power its initiatives (i.e. apps).

After all these years of existence, what I have realized is that being clueless in life is the point where you see a lot of options opening up for you. You just have to believe in yourself to make everything work. This “profound thought” is derived out of the extreme phases of 'cluelessness' that I encountered at various points of life and ultimately ending up doing what I Love – Writing.. I also love watching movies and reading books. Biking is a passion. Silly things in life makes me angry and even sillier things make me emotional. Well what’s life if not for the great number of small things and small number of great things, right?
