677.85 million GSM subscribers in India – UP adds the most.
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) the non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organisation has brought out the GSM Cellular subscriber figures for May 2012 that says that at present has around 677.85 million GSM users across the country.
Out of these 7.27 million subscribers were added in the month of May 2012 alone, which is a 1.08 per cent increase since last month. While Airtel added the maximum number of subscribers, 2.01 million, MTNL lost 0.17 million subscribers in a month. However, the maximum number of subscribers this year were added in the month of February 2012, a humongous 8.77 million. And Airtel has been the one to gain the most. It has gathered 185.30 million users alone, with 27.34 per cent market share over its competitors, as of May 2012. Vodafone comes second with a market share of 22.50 per cent followed by Idea with 17.11 per cent. Airtel, in total it has added 904.3 million subscribers over the last 5 months with an average of 180.86 million users per month.
It’s an interesting to note that UP has added 1,441,238 subscribers in a month alone (May 2012). The least was added by Chennai, only 22,085.
States of Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, better known as the B circle, are the fastest growing. Barring February 2012, where A circle comprising of the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, grew by 1.31 per cent MoM, B circle has been growing at an average of 1.23 per cent monthly. It forms 46.08 per cent of the total additions made in May 2012.
